What is Open Access?

Open Access refers to the international and academic movement that strives for free and online access to scientific information, such as publications and data. The traditional subscription model, which required readers or libraries to pay a monthly or yearly subscription in order to access academic publications, is taken over by the Open Access-model.

Open Access is part of Open Science. In 2009, the Vereniging Hogescholen signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access and, in 2017, also the Nationaal Plan Open Science. These declarations encourage researchers to make their research results freely available if financed with public funds in Open Access journals or via online repositories. The Hanze University of Applied Sciences endorses Open Access with the motto "Share your talent, move the world". At the Hanze UAS, the ambition is to make all publications of applied research are publicly accessible, unless there are important reasons not to.

Benefits of Open Access publishing

Open Access publishing has various benefits for researchers and society:

  • When research results are published open access, anyone can read, download, copy, use and spread it freely. This applies to scientific as well as applied research. With Open Access, subscription costs are no longer a barrier.

  • New ideas and solutions from scientific and applied research can be disseminated more easily and quickly, which can serve as an incentive for new research contributing to science and society.

  • Research shows that Open Access articles have a higher citation rate

  • Further, other individuals and businesses have broad access to the most recent scientific ideas and results. With that, Open Access impacts and contributes to the knowledge economy and society and creates economic impulses.

  • Open Access allows for broader reuse, which means that recent knowledge can be used immediately in teaching.

Open Access policy

The Hanze University of Applied Sciences endorses Open Sciences based on the conviction that applied research contributes towards the solution of societal issues. This objective is realised by sharing as much knowledge and solutions as quickly as possible. The Hanze UAS makes its research results publicly available to contribute toward the dissemination of knowledge in the region and on a national and international level. Publications are accessible for future research and the society through our repositories as described in the Open Science framework of the Hanze UAS.

Open Access is a part of the broader concept of Open Science, which is a scientific process based on new methods for the dissemination of knowledge using digital technology and tools to collaborate, as described in the Nationaal Plan Open Science.

Plan S is an initiative of eighteen European research funders launched in 2018 to accelerate the transition to 100% Open Access. Plan S relates to publications funded by participating research funders, such as NWO and ZonMw.
