ATLAS.ti is a software program used for coding and analyzing qualitative research data, such as:
Updates to the ATLAS.ti software are released regularly. Sometimes these are small interim updates (with improved or new functionalities), but annually the software is also being renamed. The version number will then be that of the current year. Thus, in 2025 we have ATLAS.ti 25 and so on.
Do you still have (materials from) an earlier version of ATLAS.ti?
You can generally install the newer version of ATLAS.ti (e.g., version 25) alongside the older version you already have (e.g., version 24). Materials you created in an earlier version can be imported into the newer version. Note that this requires you to have created a Project Bundle of your work! It is therefore important to create a Project Bundle of existing work before installing a new version and deleting the older version!
As a Hanze University student or employee, you can use the latest version of ATLAS.ti for free when you create an account with your Hanze pl. or st. email address.
There are regular updates to the software and new features are added with a release of a new version.
CAUTION:
It is necessary to create your ATLAS.ti account using on your Hanze email address!
You can download ATLAS.ti on your own device (Windows or Apple) or on your Hanze personal laptop.
How to create an account for ATLAS.ti (note: do this using your Hanze email address!) and how to install the program and start using a full version of it can be read in these knowledge items:
ATLAS.ti account student
ATLAS.ti account employee
After you create an ATLAS.ti account with your Hanze email address, you can install the full version of the software. You can read how to do that here:
ATLAS.ti for WIndows
ATLAS.ti for MacBook
CAUTION:
Some things work just a little differently in ATLAS.ti than we are used to from e.g. Word.
For example, saving your files works quite differently:
Function: Save
Saves your work, but you can only access it on the same device and only via the software.
The file can NOT be found on e.g. your hard drive and you cannot backup it or share it with anyone.
Function: Snapshot
Saves the work under another name (a name is suggested, but you can change it). You save a copy of the file, so to speak. The original file remains opened and remains the file you are working in, unless you switch between the versions yourself. (The snapshot function is similar to the save as function in e.g. Word, but there the 'save as' file is opened automatically so you continue working in the new file you created).
The new (copy) file can only be accessed on the same device and only through the software.
The file can NOT be found on e.g. your hard disk and you cannot backup it or share it with anyone.
Function: Export
If you want to:
- open the file yourself on another device;
- share the file with others;
- save the file to a location of your choosing
you need to make it a Project Bundle.
You do this as follows:
- save the file in the usual way;
- then save it using the Export function (you can choose a name and location yourself).
- the file format is .atlasti and you can save and open it on other devices (your own or others').
Creating a Project Bundle is essential to be able to open the project on another device. Even if you're the only one working on a project and/or do not need to switch between devices by default, it is important to regularly create a Project Bundle of your work. This is the only way to ensure that no work is lost in case of e.g. a computer crash (a regular backup of your computer is not sufficient)! Make sure that you also store the Project Bundle outside the device itself in a responsible way!
